The best Google Nest Mini deals and prices for December 2022

Alexa gets more powerful when you include its library of third-party skills, but you often need to know the specific wording to make things work. For example, if I ask Google Assistant, "Where is Blade Runner 2049 playing near me?" it will give me movie showtimes, automatically. For Alexa, you have to specifically "Ask Fandango." I can ask Google Assistant directly for a fried chicken recipe; with Alexa, you need to remember to enable the Allrecipes skill. That said, Alexa's recipes then come from Allrecipes, a reliable source; Google's came from some site I'd never heard of. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The Google Home Mini is the predecessor to the Google Nest Mini.

The first screen of the app should automatically detect the Home Mini. But, keep in mind that it’s best viewed as a supplement to the Home family, not the foundation. This device’s specialty, aside from being oh-so smart, is mainly to reward those who are already within Google’s Cast-enabled walled garden with a cheap, new device. If you want to solely use the Home Mini as a set of Bluetooth speakers, the Google Home app offers up pairing settings, though they are rather buried within the app. The Google Home Mini is the most affordable Google Assistant-enabled speaker available and thankfully, its voice recognition doesn’t suffer from the reduction in size and price.

With Nest Mini and Nest Audio, all your Matter devices will work seamlessly with Google Home. You can even use this smart speaker to work with your smart home as it's compatible with a range of different systems, like Phillips Hue and Nest. Google Assistant is better than any other voice assistant at recognising what you’re trying to say, even if you’ve garbled the question. In general, Google Assistant is better at interpreting loose, natural-language queries than Alexa is.

Google Home Mini is the company’s new smart speaker that shrinks down all the intelligence into a cheaper, smaller package. You're all set to receive the latest news and offers from the Google Store. This mini speaker can get fairly loud, but there’s no bass in the delivery. That means that the Home Mini is exactly like the larger, more expensive Google Home and even the much more powerful Google Home Max in that it can control your smart home devices. While the others make for very solid standalone speakers from a performance standpoint, the Home Mini can’t hold its own as the sole sound-maker in your house. Speaking of Cast, Google’s latest speaker works best within a crowd of other Cast-enabled devices.

Control your Nest thermostat as well as any appliances you have using smart plugs, or simply settle in and listen to the latest news, podcasts and audiobooks. Google Nest Mini deals can save you plenty of cash on the brand's own smart speakers, and the best part is these are already particularly well priced devices. See all the active audio and video streams on your compatible home devices in one place, change the volume, skip to the next track, or quickly change which speakers they’re playing from. The Home tab gives you shortcuts for the things you do most, like playing music or dimming the lights when you want to start a movie. Control it all with just a tap or two – and get to the good stuff faster. The Feed tab highlights important events in your home in one place.

We're seeing more Alexa-enabled speakers than Google-enabled speakers coming down the pike in the next few months, and Alexa has maintained its lead in third-party services. You plug the Mini into the wall and set it up through the Google Home app on Android or iOS. Then, when you say "Hey Google," four soft LEDs light up in the middle of the speaker, and Google Assistant answers. The app is very similar to the Alexa app (and, like the Alexa app, it buries many of its options and third-party services under a hidden menu). You've got yourself one of Google's adorable Home Mini smart speakers, but now that you've unpacked the box and plugged it in, you're trying to figure out how to get the whole thing set up.

See your activity, delete it manually, or choose to delete it automatically. Ask questions like “Where can I change my privacy settings? ” to get answers to the most common privacy and security questions. Create Routines that allow you to turn on compatible lights, check the weather, play the news, and more with one simple command. If you’re in the market for a cheap speaker, the Google Home Mini will do the trick for many.

Please note that if you were trying to place an order, it will not have been processed at this time.

But there just aren't that many Chromecast-enabled speakers, and you can plug an Echo Dot into anything. You can get similar results by connecting a Chromecast Audio to your favorite speaker and using it with the Mini, but that's an extra purchase and step that will be a deal breaker for many people. The Google Nest Mini is a refreshed Google Home Mini model, with all the same Google Assistant features and integrations plus added quality of life enhancements in the hardware department. Ask your Google Nest Mini to play your favourite songs on Spotify, stream your favourite movie through a Chromecast, or adjust your Philips Hue lighting, all using just your voice.

In some cases, that's by choice; in other cases, it's due to acquisitions, like buying companies and inherited technology. We understand and embrace the fact that it's a messy world in IT, and that many of our customers for years are going to have some of their resources on premises, some on AWS. We want to make that entire hybrid environment as easy and as powerful for customers as possible, so we've actually invested and continue to invest very heavily in these hybrid capabilities. What we're really trying to do is to look at that end-to-end journey of data and to build really compelling, powerful capabilities and services at each stop in that data journey and then…knit all that together with strong concepts like governance. By putting good governance in place about who has access to what data and where you want to be careful within those guardrails that you set up, you can then set people free to be creative and to explore all the data that's available to them. What I believe is most important — and what we have honed in on at Zest AI — is the fact that you can’t change anything for the better if equitable access to capital isn't available for everyone.

Strong majorities across partisan groups feel negatively, but Republicans and independents are much more likely than Democrats to say the economy is in poor shape. Solid majorities across the state’s major regions as well as all demographic groups say the economy is in not so good or poor shape. In a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, 24 percent (3% excellent, 21% good) of adults nationwide felt positively about the US economy, while 74 percent (36% not so good, 38% poor) expressed negative views.

For most companies, the cloud represents operating expense, not capital expense. You're not buying servers, you're basically paying per unit of time or unit of storage. That provides tremendous flexibility for many companies who just don't have the CapEx in their budgets to still be able to get important, innovation-driving projects done.

We advocate for modernized financial policies and regulations that allow fintech innovation to drive competition in the economy and expand consumer choice. Open finance has supported more inclusive, competitive financial systems for consumers and small businesses in the U.S. and across the globe – and there is room to do much more. As an example, the National Consumer Law Consumer recently put out a new report that looked at consumers providing access to their bank account data so their rent payments could inform their mortgage underwriting and help build credit. When people can easily switch to another company and bring their financial history with them, that presents real competition to legacy services and forces everyone to improve, with positive results for consumers.

Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis, meanwhile, said the CFPB "needs the same Congressional oversight as every other government agency." A three-judge panel of the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals found Wednesday that the CFPB’s funding structure violated the Constitution’s separation of powers doctrine. A federal appeals court struck a major blow against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with a finding that its funding mechanism is unconstitutional. A legal battle is just one more factor casting doubt on the consumer finance regulator’s rulings. We're giving away one million GB of free data to support those in need this Christmas.

While it's absolutely reasonable to worry about a world in which more and more properties are concentrated in the hands of singular, giant megacorps, it does look a bit odd if you're complaining about losing access to games while stopping them from joining competing services. Read the CFPB’s recent enforcement action against Regions Bank for charging surprise overdraft fees. An overdraft fee can become a surprise fee when the customer doesn’t reasonably expect their actions to incur an overdraft fee.

Afterwards, Congress passed a new law, using the decisions from judges in this court and the D.C. So I'm sure people look at prior decisions and try to apply them in the ways that they want to. I think there's been some discussion that people may litigate some of these things, so I can't comment, because those frequently do come to our courthouse. So much of what judges do is that we rely on the parties that are before us to tell us what's right and what's wrong. And then, you know, obviously, they'll have different views, and we make a decision based on what people say in front of us. Our U.S. attorney at the time, Jessie Liu, had this idea of using financial investigations in a way that was not limited to just white collar crime, or even narcotics cases, but also for cyber investigations, to national security investigations, and in civil cases.

That way, in the Obama administration’s view, the agency could avoid political influence and be funded similarly to other banking regulators. But Republicans have chafed at what they view as anti-business practices and a lack of oversight. Competition policy encourages companies to offer consumers goods and services on the most favourable terms. To be effective, competition requires companies to act independently of each other, and subject to the pressure exerted by their competitors. Approval of Congress remains low, with fewer than four in ten adults (37%) and likely voters (29%) approving.

Each week, you’ll get a crash course on the biggest issues to make your next financial decision the right one. In ensuring smooth operation of digital production environments and in the construction and operation of industrial or commercial buildings, the underlying power distribution and industrial controls are decisive. The Siemens portfolio covers the whole spectrum of applications to design, finance, build, operate and maintain a modern smart grid and power distribution systems. The bulletin explains that indiscriminately charging these depositor fees, regardless of circumstances, likely violates the Consumer Financial Protection Act. By bypassing the state’s general fund and the voter-approved Prop 98 education funding guarantees, Prop 30 sets a dangerous precedent for big corporations to set up their own taxpayer-funded handout.

When Should You Bring Your New Puppy Home?

Choose a good dog bed for them, safe dog toys, a food dish, a water dish, a collar and lead, puppy food, a good brush suitable for the breed of dog, puppy shampoo, a puppy toothbrush and dog toothpaste . During this stage, puppies learn to inhibit their bite—which is important if they're going to get along with dogs and people in the future. The pup’s mother and siblings will let them know in no uncertain terms that a hard bite is not OK. They will also learn to play, to share and to be handled by humans. While some states have no laws at all, the majority of them do have restrictions on selling puppies before the age of eight weeks. For example, the state of Connecticut makes selling puppies under six weeks illegal.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus that affects all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies less than four months of age are at the most risk to contract it. The virus attacks the gastrointestinal system and creates a loss of appetite, vomiting, fever, and often severe, bloody diarrhea. Extreme dehydration can come on rapidly and kill a dog within 48-to-72 hours, so prompt veterinary attention is crucial. There is no cure, so keeping the dog hydrated and controlling the secondary symptoms can keep him going until his immune system beats the illness. I have some clients who come in the very moment they get the pup, which is totally fine.

Find a dog trainer

Their results were unambiguous—the dogs separated from their litter at an early age did not fare as well. Just the closer to 8 weeks it is, the better it is in some ways. But sometimes, for instance an inexperienced owner, or one who cannot devote as much time as necessary into puppy socialization, it can be better fo the puppy to leave puppy with the breeder an extra week or 3.

As there’s no cure for rabies, keeping up with regular vaccinations is crucial. Distemper is a contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems of dogs. Dogs usually become infected through airborne exposure from an infected dog or wild animal.

Questions Veterinarians Wish You Would Ask About Your Puppy

Most common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. They'll also get their first rabies vaccine depending on state-mandated vaccine schedules for puppies, as well as a second shot of the Lepto vaccine . Unlike most diseases on this list, Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria, and some dogs may show no symptoms at all. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it can be spread from animals to people. When symptoms do appear, they can include fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, severe weakness and lethargy, stiffness, jaundice, muscle pain, infertility, kidney failure . Antibiotics are effective, and the sooner they are given, the better.

They have been socialised and have most likely met other animals and people in the household. Continue socialization by introducing new people and letting your puppy meet calm dogs post-vaccinations. A safe way to do this is having your pup in a playpen by the other pup, so they can observe and interact with a barrier in place. Additionally, start getting them used to common noises they will hear in everyday situations such as construction, traffic, garbage trucks, etc. by playing recordings that you can find in YouTube videos.

Could you offer a forever home to a dog or puppy in our care?

While puppies require constant care, they’ll gradually learn how to be comfortable alone for an eight-hour workday. Start threshold training which involves asking your puppy to Sit at doorways, open doors, crosswalks, etc., and then walking through them calmly. This will help discourage your puppy from lunging and pulling each time they see an open doorway to another room a.k.a. a new adventure to explore, and helps your walks be calmer. Yes, you will miss out on experiencing the joys of a puppy, and puppies do bond stronger the younger they are. But it doesn’t mean they will not bond to you, and you would be sidestepping a lot of the early work too.

Your puppy’s optimum size range is between 20 and 30 pounds. There will always be a small risk for your puppy, but you cannot ignore socialization, it’s just too important. More dogs die each year of bad behavior and their owners giving them up to shelters because they were under-socialized and became unmanageable than the number who die of parvo each year. Once again, it’s a case of balancing the risk Vs the reward. Here in California parvo is epidemic and we have been told not to take the puppy almost anywhere until all three sets of shots are complete and the dog is 16 weeks old.

Transmitted via ticks, an infected dog often starts limping, his lymph nodes swell, his temperature rises, and he stops eating. The disease can affect his heart, kidney, and joints, among other things, or lead to neurological disorders if left untreated. If diagnosed quickly, a course of antibiotics is extremely helpful, though relapses can occur months or even years later. Another thing you should bring to the new puppy exam is your questions!

Dogs are social animals and shouldn’t be cooped up in a kennel or tied up outside all day. Dogs are the happiest when they’re with the people they love. Janek reiterated that puppies need exercise, time to bond, and time to get used to their new environment. You can also try socializing your puppy with friends and relatives who have well socialized, healthy, friendly dogs who are up to date on their vaccinations. So for the benefit of you and your Labrador, leave them with their mother and litter-mates until 8 weeks of age. If you have brought home a puppy that is 8 weeks then beware from the start.

And people adopt puppies and dogs of all ages from recues, who then adapt and bond and become great additions to the family. Your puppy will be on a current food brand from the shelter or breeder. You will need to have about a month’s worth of this diet on hand before your puppy arrives.

It is important to be gentle with your puppy when taking it home. A good breeder won’t ever consider letting their puppy go before 7 weeks of age, and will be adamant the 8 week threshold is reached, especially if they feel you’re an inexperienced owner. If a breeder tries to convince you to take the puppy home before 8 weeks, it’s usually for selfish reasons such as financial savings and not wishing to invest time into care and socialization. So be very suspicious of the breeder if this is their wish.

Distemper and parvovirus are two different illnesses that are potentially fatal if not treated quickly. Vaccination is a great way to give your puppy immunity to infectious diseases and ensure that they’re as safe and healthy as they can be. Signs of leptospirosis may include shivering, fever, muscle tenderness, increased thirst, dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, jaundice, kidney failure, liver failure, etc.

While it is certain that it is harmful to remove puppies from their litter at too young an age , there is still a debate as to just how long a breeder should keep puppies before giving them up to their new owners. There is some consensus among breeders that smaller dogs are a bit more fragile and some breeders will not let them go until they are 10 or even 12 weeks of age. But much longer than that is not advisable; the data from Scott and Fuller suggest that the dogs should be in their new home earlier than 14 weeks of age in order to bond with their new owners.

Puppy Mosaic

If for some reason you're caring for newborn pups, you can wash them gently with a warm, moist washcloth. While the mother dog generally licks her puppies to clean them, the warm washcloth rubbed gently over the body -- particularly the lower abdomen and rectum areas -- will accomplish the same thing. Newborn puppies can't eliminate wastes without such stimulation.

Basic Puppy Training Timeline: How and When to Start

It’s also the time when the puppy will form a strong bond with the humans taking care of him. First-year puppy shots are typically more expensive than what you’d spend on vaccines for dogs because you need to get them every couple of weeks, as opposed to every one to three years. In general, puppies should get their first shots as soon as they are weaned (when they no longer receive antibodies from mom’s milk), or around 6 to 8 weeks of age. After that, puppies should receive a series of vaccines every two to four weeks between the ages of 6 and 20 weeks old. The canine coronavirus is not in any way similar to COVID-19 in people. Canine coronavirus usually affects a dog’s GI system, but it can also cause respiratory infections.

During the separation period, puppies will likely cry if they can’t greet you. Lincoln recommends that you give them attention whenever you’re with them. This will help to reduce the amount of crying your puppy will experience.

Is 6 weeks too early to take a puppy home?

If taken away before these lessons are learnt, the puppy will bite too hard not knowing any better and this can be very dangerous as the puppy matures into a larger and stronger dog. It’s litter-mates will yelp with pain and move away, and the mother will snarl and discipline the puppy if it bites and hurts while suckling. To apply this, first find out which rewards work best for your puppy. Some puppies might find something as simple as a piece of their normal kibble exciting enough to train with, while others might need something tastier, like a special training treat. There is so much that goes into raising a puppy, even in just that first week!

A mother will teach them how to properly suckle a puppy and the proper way to chew, but they need to learn quickly or they’ll become hungry. If you’re considering taking a puppy home, you may be wondering if five weeks is too early. While puppies will enjoy playing with their littermates, you may want to spend some time with your puppy alone. Here’s what to do when your 5 week-old puppy starts to act weird.

Use Consistency When Training Your Puppy

Nonetheless I was intrigued by this apparently well accepted notion that 49 days or seven weeks of age is the optimal time for a puppy to go to its new home. So I started an extensive literature search that extended all the way back to the 1940s, and continued up to the present and covered all of the veterinary and behavioural literature that I could access. I came up with not one single study suggesting that there is something special or valuable about choosing seven weeks as the time to send a puppy to its new home.

The laws often exclude nonprofit animal shelters or humane societies from these limitations. For many states, the laws only apply to pet dealers, retail pet stores, or pet breeders. Some states have laws specifying age requirements, usually at least 8 weeks, before puppies can be sold to the public.

20 weeks of age

He is fully weaned but I am concerned for his behaviour in the future. That is way, way too young to be leaving their mother and could lead to all sorts of problems. The best thing to do is to return the puppy to his mother for a few weeks. If that’s simply not possible for whatever reason, then go to your local vet today – tomorrow if you can’t go today – and follow their advice. This period declines at about 12 weeks of age and almost completely ends at 14 weeks where fear begins to creep in as a natural trait essential to survival if it lived in the wild. The things a puppy is socialized to during its first 12 weeks have a profound effect on its level of confidence and levels of fear later in its life.

Canine coronavirus usually affects dogs’ gastrointestinal systems, though it can also cause respiratory infections. Signs include most GI symptoms, including loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Doctors can keep a dog hydrated, warm, and comfortable, and help alleviate nausea, but no drug kills coronaviruses. During this early period, your puppy should eat between 120 and 2000 calories per day.

This is when they learn to get along with other dogs, with the help of their mother and littermates. Just like with human children, puppies go through a number of developmental stages as they grow. While some breeds mature more slowly in a physical sense, it’s safe to generalize when it comes to a puppy’s mental development, regardless of breed. This is the age when puppies start to develop their own teeth. However, it takes time for puppies to learn how to suckle.

AKC actively advocates for responsible dog ownership and is dedicated to advancing dog sports. When the puppies go to their new homes, breeders can coach their puppy owners on how to socialize properly and safely, without overwhelming or traumatizing them. Rabies is a viral infection caused by a virus secreted in the saliva. According to the Humane Society, because the infection affects the nervous system, most rabid animals behave abnormally. Infected dogs typically become fearful, anxious, agitated, and/or aggressive.

If you acquired your dog from a shelter, he would most likely have been vaccinated, up until the age when you got him. Of course, your veterinarian should weigh in and can always provide more information and guidance if needed on necessary and optional vaccinations. At Paws in Work we’re always aware of the needs of the puppies who come with us to our events... When you’re considering adding a dog to your family, decide who is responsible for feeding, grooming, exercising, and training the dog. A new dog in the family is a great addition if everyone agrees to do their part in their care.

I mentioned this to a friend of mine who is an established dog trainer and she laughed and suggested, “Well seven is a lucky number, and 7×7 gives you 49. However, in England the politicians are apparently not as superstitious and they have recently passed a law specifying that puppies sold in pet stores may not be younger than eight weeks of age. I was speaking to a well-respected breeder of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers and mentioned to her that I had picked up my new puppy from his breeder at the age of nine weeks. Puppies also have what some animal behaviorists call a primary socialization period, which begins as they become more aware of the world around them at 3-to-5 weeks of age. Through their mother and littermates, puppies begin to learn appropriate play behaviors and how to communicate with and relate to other dogs. Your goal is to help your puppy to grow up into a confident and friendly adult dog.

When the disease is treated early and aggressively, the chances for recovery are quite good but there’s still a risk of permanent kidney/liver damage. In 1998, Island released Beautiful Maladies, a compilation of 23 Waits tracks from his five albums with the company; he had been allowed to select the tracks himself. That year, Waits also produced and funded Weiss's album, Extremely Cool, as a favor to his old friend. Although Waits had provided a voice-over for a 1981 television advert for Butcher's Blend dog food, he hated when musicians allowed companies to use their songs in advertising; he said that "artists who take money for ads poison and pervert their songs".

Among the celebrities who have described themselves as Waits fans are Johnny Depp, John Oliver, Jordan Peterson, Jerry Hall, Megan Mullally, and Nick Offerman. In Britain, prominent figures who have described themselves as Waits fans include the historian Simon Schama, the writer Raymond Briggs, the presenter Graham Norton, and the actor Colin Firth. Bob Dylan, who was a major influence on the young Waits, stated that Waits was one of his "secret heroes". In 1989, Waits began planning a collaboration with Robert Wilson, a theatre director he had known throughout the 1980s.

Early musical career: 1972–1976

While on the set of One from the Heart, Waits met Kathleen Brennan, a young Irish-American woman working as an assistant story editor; Waits later described encountering her as "love at first sight". In August 1980, they married at a 24-hour wedding chapel on Manchester Boulevard in Watts before honeymooning in Tralee, a town in County Kerry, Ireland, where Brennan had family. Returning to Los Angeles, the couple moved into a Union Avenue apartment. Hoskyns noted that with Brennan, "Waits had found the stabilizing, nurturing companion he'd always wanted", and that she brought him "a sense of emotional security he had never known" before. At the same time, many of his old friends felt cut off after his marriage. Tom also contributed a song to the Wim Wenders film, The End of Violence while, in 1998, Waits and Brennan composed the score and a song for Bunny, which won the Oscar for Best Short Film .

Jarmusch described Waits as "a very contradictory character", stating that he is "potentially violent if he thinks someone is screwing with him, but he's gentle and kind too".

Personal life

In between this film work, Waits also recorded a vocal for Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet, the English composer Gavin Bryars remarkable 75-minute orchestral essay. The work centred on a 1971 field recording of a London hobo singing a religious tune; on Bryars album, Waits duets along with the voice of the tramp. His soundtrack featuring duets with country singer Crystal Gayle - is an enduring classic of American cinema. It was the start of a long association with Coppola, evidenced by Waits appearances as an actor in the directors Rumble Fish, The Outsiders, The Cotton Club and as the unforgettable Renfield in Bram Stokers Dracula. Each of the three CDs is separately grouped and sub-titled Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards to capture the full spectrum of Waits ranging and roving musical styles. Brawlers is chock full of raucous blues and full-throated juke joint stomp; Bawlers comprises Celtic and country ballads, waltzes, lullabies, piano and classic lyrical Waits songs while Bastards is filled with experimental music and strange tales.

He developed a love of R&B and soul singers like Ray Charles, James Brown, and Wilson Pickett, as well as country music and Roy Orbison. Bob Dylan later became a strong influence, with Waits placing transcriptions of Dylan's lyrics on his bedroom walls. He was an avid watcher of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Twilight Zone. A number of events have been held for fans of Waits's work, such as "Waiting for Waits" in Mallorca and the "Straydogs Party" in Denmark. Various cabaret shows have been held devoted to Waits's songs, including Robert Berdahl's Warm Beer, Cold Women and Stewart D'Arrietta's Belly of a Drunken Piano. Also in 2000, Waits began writing songs for Wilson's production of the Georg Büchner play, Woyzeck, scheduled to start at the Betty Nansen Theater in Copenhagen in November 2000. He initially worked on the songs at home before traveling to Copenhagen for rehearsals in October. Waits stated that he liked the play because it was "a proletariat story ... about a poor soldier who is manipulated by the government".

Jarmusch noted that "Tom and I have a kindred aesthetic. An interest in unambitious people, marginal people." The pair developed a friendship; Waits called Jarmusch "Dr Sullen", while Jarmusch called Waits "The Prince of Melancholy". Newly married and with his Elektra-Asylum contract completed, Waits decided that it was time to artistically reinvent himself. He wanted to move away from using Howe as his producer, although the two parted on good terms. With Brennan's help, he began the process of firing Cohen as his manager, with he and Brennan taking on managerial responsibilities themselves. He later noted that "once you've heard Beefheart it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood." He also came under the influence of Harry Partch, a composer who created his own instruments out of everyday materials.

Waits has been determined to keep a distance between his public persona and his personal life. According to Hoskyns, Waits hides behind his persona, noting that "Tom Waits is as much of a character created for his fans as it is a real man". In Hoskyns's view, Waits's self-image is in part "a self-protective device, a screen to deflect attention".

Waits decided that he wanted to record an album of the songs written for The Black Rider play, doing so at Los Angeles' Sunset Sound Factory. Waits and Wilson decided to collaborate again, this time on an operatic treatment about the novelist Lewis Carroll's relationship with Alice Liddell, who had provided the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Again scheduled to premier at the Thalia, they began working on the project in Hamburg in early 1992. Waits characterized the songs he wrote for the play as "adult songs for children, or children's songs for adults". In his lyrics, Waits drew on his increasing interest in freak shows and the physically deformed. He thought the play itself was about "repression, mental illness and obsessive, compulsive disorders".

The Black Rider, Bone Machine, and Alice: 1989–1998

That same year Tom and Kathleen wrote two songs for Barry Levinsons Liberty Heights film. A year later, in 1983, Waits signed to Island Records, then one of the worlds leading independent labels. Island rescued the now legendary Swordfishtrombones and released it with new artwork as his first album for the label. In May 1977, Waits and close friend Chuck E. Weiss were arrested for fighting with police officers in a coffee shop. They were charged with two counts of disturbing the peace but were acquitted after the defense produced eight witnesses who refuted the police officers' account of the incident. In response, Waits sued the Los Angeles Police Department and five years later was awarded $7,500 in damages.

Jazz Pros

He changed the setlist for each performance; most of the songs chosen were from his two Island albums. In July 1978, Waits began the recording sessions for his album Blue Valentine. Part way through the sessions, he replaced his musicians in order to create a less jazz-oriented sound; for the album, he switched from a piano to an electric guitar as his main instrument. For the album's back cover, Waits used a picture of himself and Jones leaning against his car, a 1964 Ford Thunderbird, taken by Elliot Gilbert. From the album, Waits's first single was released, a performance of "Somewhere", from the musical "West Side Story", but it failed to chart.

In July 1976, he recorded the album Small Change, again produced by Howe. In later years, he described it as a seminal episode in his development as a songwriter, describing it as the point when he became "completely confident in the craft". On release, the album was critically well received and was his first release to break into the Billboard Top 100 Album List, peaking at number 89. Later, biographer Patrick Humphries called Small Change Waits's "masterpiece". He received growing press attention, being profiled in Newsweek, Time, Vogue, and The New Yorker; he had begun to accrue a cult following. He went on tour to promote the new album, backed by the Nocturnal Emissions .

At the June concert in El Paso, Texas, he was awarded the key to the city. Waits had also continued interacting and working with other artists he admired. He was a great fan of The Pogues and went on a Chicago pub crawl with them in 1986. The following year, he appeared as a master of ceremonies on several dates of Elvis Costello's "Wheel of Fortune" tour.

He recorded it at Sunset Sound studios and produced the album himself; Brennan often attended the sessions and gave him advice. Swordfishtrombones abandoned the jazz sound characteristic of his earlier work; it was his first album not to feature a saxophone. When the album was finished, he took it to Asylum, but they declined to release it. Waits wanted to leave the label; in his view, "They liked dropping my name in terms of me being a 'prestige' artist, but when it came down to it they didn't invest a whole lot in me in terms of faith".
